In 2007 Ram Gopal Varma received more flak than what most people receive in a lifetime. RGV Ki Aag, Go, Nishabd, it seems the man could do nothing right. And industry insiders and critics were busy writing him off as a has-been. But RGV in the tradition of a true survivor has returned to prove his worth. Sarkar Raj may not set the box-office on fire but RGV is back in the running for now.
With Sarkar, Ram Gopal Varma had precisely established the central characters, set the ambience, defined the aura and demarcated the genre. So in the follow-up he simply had to take the legend ahead while narrating a new episode. And to a decent degree he succeeds in carrying the legacy forward.

Hastey Hastey will not leave you rolling in laughter! At the end of it, you will be relieved it is finally over.
The movie starts with a girl in a mini strutting on the streets of New York and we are only treated to side glances. Suddenly, four police cars surround her and she is arrested.
Then you see Maya (Nisha Rawal) disconnecting Neel’s (Jimmy Shergill) phone calls and then even he is arrested. Rajpal Yadav plays Sunny, his best friend, who dresses like a hip-hopper and ‘Dyoood’ is his favouirte way to address best buddy Neel. What is harder to believe is that he is a womanizer! He also gets to peck his firang chick a few times!
So the lousy plot, set in New York, has Neel and Maya, college classmates falling in love while Sunny likes anything with long legs and gets engaged to a blue eyed blonde, Tina. Sunny’s uncle, also played by Rajpal mistakes him to be gay while his father, also played by Yadav is angry that is getting married to a firang. And Maya’s father dislikes Neel. A business opportunity brings Neel to India, against Maya’s wishes to run a call centre with Tanvi (Monishka Gupta). Neel’s new boss is besotted with him and when he refuses her advances, she steals the money and frames him. So, the two are arrested in America.
As far as acting is concerned, Rajpal Yadav and Jimmy Sheirgill (note the change in spelling) have done a decent job, but they are not fit to be college students. Most of Yadav’s dialogues are in English and end with ‘DUDE’! It is such a waste of talent. Both the girls in the movie, Nisha and Monishka do nothing much but wear bright tacky clothes which are a few sizes too small. They would probably fare better as item girls. Jimmy and Nisha also have blondish hair to match with other heads in New York! And Monishka’s red hair is so not happening! What’s up with the blue lenses that the girls are sporting?
The music by Anu Malik is annoying too because there are too many songs that make the movie drag even further and none of them are remarkable. He really needs to get his groove back!
The less said about the story and direction, the better; even the dialogues are cheesy and corny!
The only saving grace of the movie is the location- New York but we have had enough of it in KJo’s Kal Ho Na Ho and Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna. What’s more the movie has blatantly lifted the climax of the romantic comedy Serendipity and even a few scenes from our very own KANK and KHNH. How hard a job is it to be original?
This movie is not worth your precious money. It is a better idea to watch Rajpal’s comic roles and Jimmy’s serious movies. Catch beautiful New York and a better movie in Serendipity because it is funnier than Hastey Hastey!
